ReHAB
Program awarded $2,250 Maine Community Foundation grant
The
Warren Center for Communication & Learning
has received a grant in the amount of $2,250 from the Maine
Charity Foundation Fund administered by the Maine Community
Foundation. The grant, written to support the Warren Center’s
Regional Hearing Aid Bank Program (ReHAB), will provide hearing
aids to five individuals who are in need of an aid but are
unable to afford one or receive an aid through another assistance
program.
The Maine Charity Fund was established in 1921
to receive and hold individual charitable funds and distribute
the income for charitable purposes in the state. The Maine
Community Foundation has administered the fund following its
transfer in 1993. Since its establishment in 1983, Maine Community
Foundation has created a $99 million charitable endowment with
the assistance of over 6,000 donors. The income of this endowment
supports Maine non-profit organizations and public agencies.
The only community foundation in the state, the
Maine Community Foundation is a reflection of the great value
that many people place on the state, its heritage, its people
and its communities.
For additional information on the Maine Charity
Foundation Fund or other Maine Community Foundation grants,
please check their website at www.mainecf.org.
The
ReHAB program “recycles” donated
behind-the-ear model hearing aids (BTEs) by reconditioning
the aids and then providing them to those who are in need.
Even a donated, reconditioned hearing aid costs the Warren
Center about $450.00 per aid (still more than $250 less than
even a more inexpensive new model!) The cost includes the necessary
testing, the fitting of the aid and one year of support – repairs,
cleanings and reprogramming as the recipient needs. People
interested in contributing BTE hearing aids or giving financial
assistance to the ReHAB program should contact the Warren Center
by calling 941-2850 or check the ReHAB portion of the website
at www.warrencenter.org.
Visit
www.warrencenter.org - and see the new Warren Center website!
The Warren Center
has launched its first ever website, www.warrencenter.org.
The site, which has been in the works for a while, has pages
devoted to Warren Center programs, events, activities and more.
We’ll be using the site to announce special events, so
be sure to check it often! After we got started up with the
wonderful DSL internet service with a grant from the Agnes
Lindsay Trust, we decided that it was high time to have the
site hosted. So take a look at the site and be sure to e-mail
us your feedback! Tell us about any suggestions you have, things
you’d like to see (or any problems you might have experienced
- we are new at this, after all.) For comments or suggestions,
please send an e-mail to: Public Relations Manager Monique
Gibouleau prmanager@warrencenter.org

Coping
with Memory Disorders through Communication
program course will start in February!
The popular, four-week
class designed for family members caring for Alzheimer’s patients will be offered, as usual free
of charge, beginning Friday, February 21, from 2-4 p.m. The
class will continue from 2-4 p.m. on the following three Fridays
- February 28, March 7 and 14, with a “snow date” makeup
saved for March 21 - just in case! The classes will be held
at the Redeemer Lutheran Church at 540 Essex Street in Bangor.
Speech-language
pathologist Lisa Hosfeld will lead the workshop series which
teaches caregivers of those with memory disorders,
such as Alzheimer’s disease, how to communicate more
clearly, with better understanding and less stress for both
the caregiver and the person being cared for. The program truly
focuses on the family caregiver; trained assistants are available
to care for those suffereing from Alzheimer’s while the
caregiver takes the class. An additional class will be offered
in April and May, in the evenings. While the class is free,
registration is required.
For more information about the program or to register, call
the Warren Center at 941-2850.
A
great idea for Warren Center supporters!
One Warren Center supporter held a holiday event at her home,
and asked her guests to bring, in the spirit of the holiday
season, some inexpensive item that the Warren Center needed.
From that event, we recieved markers, crayons, snacks, drink
mixes, glue, craft supplies, items for our staff kitchen and
other wonderful things! What a great idea!
We would be happy to supply anyone interested with a a little
information about the Warren Center and list of inexpensive
items (each under $5.00 or in the $5.00-$10.00 range) if they
are interested in hosting a smiliar event.
Meet
the Staff
Joyce Allard is
the Warren Center’s newest employee,
our collections/billing assistant. She deals with all the insurance
companies we deal with at the Warren Center, and that is a
big job! Some folks may remember her from Dr. Ted Logan’s
office, where she was office manager. Joyce and her husband
Dennis Allard, Sr. live in Levant, are the proud parents of
three sons and have six grandchildren! They enjoy fishing and
camping, and Joyce is an avid Stephen King fan.
We’d also like to introduce Michelle Seamens, who joined
us way back in October! Michelle is a speech therapy aide with
dual Bachelor’s degrees in German and Speech Communication
Disorders from the University of Maine. She really enjoys working
with young children, especially the preschool-aged children
she sees at the Warren Center. She and her husband Michael
live in Hermon and enjoy outdoor activities and swing and ballroom
dancing.
Thank
you Bangor Savings Bank!
Some Warren Center
staffers (and their spouses) attended the UMaine women’s
hockey game on January 6, compliments of Bangor Savings Bank.
The staff, warm and cozy in their skybox,
enjoyed not only the game against Colgate College, but also
wonderful goodies (including hot chowder and sandwiches!) from
the kind folks at Bangor Savings Bank. The festive evening
was very appreciated. Oh, and UMaine won, of course!
A
Note from the Wellness Coordinator
Wellness Coordinator Theresa Amos wants to offer heartfealt
thanks to Warren Center staff for their generous donations
toward food and gift drives this past Thanksgiving and Christmas
- way to give!
